The castle was not destroyed during the civil war and was used as an arsenal and prison. Later, Queen Eleanor of Castile, the wife of Edward I, bought it and invested a lot in its enhancement. Earlier, it was constructed as the family’s house and remained with them till 1278. During that time, it was also used as a prison. It was traditionally the home of the Earl’s of Warwick and remained their home until 25 years ago.
